This is a very interesting quote today as most people come to me to get over a very specific fear and that is the fear of networking.  Most of the business people I talk to are so afraid of being wrong when it comes to networking that they would rather just not attend any mixers or such just on the off chance they would do something wrong.  The funny part is, how do you do something wrong when in fact there are not a ton of rules?  We will talk more about some of the “right” things you can be doing at networking events over the next few weeks.  If you keep in mind that your purpose when networking is to bring value and content to your network, I think you will feel less “wrong”  Go have an awesome fun day of networking with some new people and forget about the rules for a few minutes.  See if you can add some value to someone’s conversation.

Hey Gang~~

As you know I am all about networking and I just love being around people.  Every chance I get I look to see if there is something about the person I am meeting for the first that I can grab ahold of and assist them.  I am gonna give you a great tip that you can use as soon as you are done reading this post.  Let me start with the end in mind.  I am all about connecting at live events with people and If you have read very much about me or have seen me speak live, you know I always carry a sharpie to write on business cards.  The reason I use a sharpie is that it is the only pen that can write on all the various card stocks that people are using nowadays.  Even the glossy cards that are a giant pain if you only have a ball point!

Well, here is the tip.  Start coding the cards you get at events so you can quickly determine who you would like to chat with after the event.  Here is how my coding goes.  Very Simple.  If I meet someone and the are sharp and give me some reason to chat with them further, I take my sharpie and draw a star on the front of the card.  When I get home or back to the office, I know this is a person who I will make the effort to stay in touch with.  If however, I meet someone who I think is a total dumb ass or they just threw their card at me as if their goal was to just distribute as many cards as possible I will draw a happy face on the card.  This means when I get back to the office that the card gives me a smile as I throw it in the trash can!

Funny story, I used to write “dumb ass” on the cards of people who I had no interest in talking to ever again but I learned the hard way that this was not the best approach.  I was working a trade show when a total tool started pitching me all about his business in the MOST obnoxious way possible.  I took out my best networking tool (Sharpie) and proceeded to write Dumb Ass on his card and threw it in our leads bowl.  He watched me write on the card AND put it in our leads bowl. Wouldn’t you know it, he came back a few minutes later still convinced there was a snowballs chance in hell I would be following up with him.  He asked if I could pull the card out because he had failed to write his “new” mobile number on the card.  I had to do the dance because I knew what I had written on the card.  I now draw a smiley face!

Anyone who just hands me their card or is a tool gets a smiley face.  However, everyone I think is AWESOME gets a HUGE star!  I get so excited when I come home from an event and my pocket is full of Stars!!  As a side note, I always ask myself when I am handing out a card whether the person on the receiving end thinks I am a star?  If not, I work hard to make them draw a star on my card!  I suggest you do the same!!

Hey Gang~~  I was just sitting here asking myself if there was anything that I changed in my business this month to explain the massive growth when it hit me like a dust mop!  I did a business spring cleaning!!  Does your business need a change up?  A spring cleaning?  Maybe just a change up?  Here are just a few things that might help you to get on the right track since we are coming into spring and we are always talking about spring cleaning our homes but what about our businesses?  Here are a few ideas:

• Get rid of some extra stuff!  The Gurus that talk about energy always say that if you remove some extra clutter around the office it increases the energy flow.  I just threw out 3 cans full of papers and excess clutter and it definitely changed the energy in my office.
• Move furniture! Sometimes just a little change can have a huge difference.  I have been needing to shift my desk by a few inches for a while now and just was being lazy.  I moved it a few inches and now I have even better access.  I did an office remodel and I must say it feels new and fresh.
• Change the art!  This seems a bit silly but I kept the same art on the walls but re arranged it all and I must say again the energy is very new and clean.

Every once in a while you should shake things up a bit just to make sure the energy flow shifts.  I even moved the phone to the other side of the desk and moved all my pens from the old holder to a new one and all the tiny changes have added up to one big change.  The energy in this office is totally new and exciting!  I gotta get back to work……oh and Give Someone An AWESOME day!

Google Alerts are AWESOME!

Google Alerts is a program I HIGHLY RECOMMEND… you can get it by creating a “google account” and if you have one or use Gmail then you already have access.

What are “Google Alerts”? It is a program that allows you to set up key words, names, websites that you would like to track any “online activity” about them.  You can distinguish that you want any updates, updates on video, updates on news, updates on a webpage, or updates in a group all relating to your key terms.  You choose to have the information updated to you weekly or daily or as it happens. You can also choose how the updates get delivered to you – via email (plain text or html) or rss feed.

Some suggestions on how to use Google Alerts:

• Track You! – you should always have google alerts for your name your & your company name.  This will set up an alert to you for when people refer to you somewhere on the internet – very important because you might miss good statements you can thank peeps for or miss bad things.
• Track Your Competitors – how about knowing what your competition is doing?  Have it delivered to your inbox and don’t waste time searching.
• Track Your Keywords – keep an eye out on key terms that deal with your business so you can stay up on the latest and greatest.
• Track Your Material – if you have a website or blog you want to protect your content – pick out key phrases from your website or blog and set up an alert – it will let you know if someone else steals your content.

How many times have you heard your spouse say that, huh? Well, he or she is probably right. You can pick up the phone and call, and you should be doing it every day to prospective customers.

You say you hate cold calls? So do I. So what? They can be the lifeblood of your business. And besides, once you make that first really successful cold call, you’ll never look at it the same way again. You may not want to hear it, but the only way to get over your fear of dialing that number is just to do it. Ask any successful network marketer and they’ll tell you basically the same story. They loathed the idea of cold calls but made them anyway and guess what? It worked! More times that you’d imagine. And today they have no problem with calling someone, anyone, and introducing themselves and their product or service.

For the sake of whomever it is that I am calling, when I get them on the phone I quickly say who I am and why I’m calling. People don’t like to waste their time and you shouldn’t waste yours. If a particular prospect is adamant about not wanting what you’re selling, get off the phone. No need to waste your own time as well. But remember, those prospects are also in business and are always looking for ways to bolster their own company. If your product or service can do that for them, they’ll gladly listen to what you have to say.

Hey Gang~~  I just wanted to show you a quick video I made about scratching something off of your “to do” list.  I was coming back form the No Excuses Summit and realized how many excuses I had made while at the event.  I was not going to share this video with my blog based on the fact I was kinda outing myself about making excuses but I am only human (no jokes here please). One of the things I am getting really good at is creating my daily list of activities and then acting as if I am leaving my office for a week the next day.  This puts me in a state low level panic to get it all complete but at the end of the day, I get WAY more accomplished.

I thought this was so simple it was almost comical!  The more meetings you do, attend or throw all will contribute to your business growing!  This is one of those little nuggets that for me always seen to hit home harder tan the long drawn out lectures.  If we just do more meetings we will make more money.  I know there will be some push back saying that you don’t want o do meetings but here is the thing. They work and you have the option of being right or rich, pick one.  There will be more written on this topic as we go but I have committed to putting out some type of content every single day.  Remember More Meetings Means More Money.  Think about it…..
